Ah, grilled cheese. Is there any greater comfort food? Crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, and a hearty meal for a sandwich, it’s the meal that keeps on giving. When you’re out camping with the family, you want meals that are simple to prepare and quick to whip up (unless you’re glamping). This is where the humble grilled cheese comes in. It’s endlessly versatile and can be made to suit any dietary needs.

Simply prepare your sandwiches before you head out, wrap in foil, and when you’re ready, toss them on the campfire or grill for a few minutes on each side.

1. The Classic
Buttered bread with your favorite cheddar cheese on the inside! 
2. The Bacon Lover
Who doesn’t love bacon? Add a few pre-cooked strips to the classic.
3. The Breakfast Sandwich
Scramble two eggs per sandwich, and fry in a non-stick pan without stirring. You want a flat sheet of eggs for this sandwich, folded to fit the sandwich. Layer your favorite cheese, the eggs, and deli meat.
4. The Margarita
Spread a thin layer of pizza sauce on the inside of the sandwich, sprinkle basil and garlic powder (or use fresh if you have the time!) and top with a thin layer of sliced tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. Be sure to eat this one soon after packing as it won’t keep well.
5. The Hawaiian
Do you love Hawaiian pizza? This one is for you! Layer Swiss or mozzarella cheese with a slice of pineapple and two slices of deli ham.
6. The Grilled Goat
Crumble goat cheese, and add a layer of spinach and bacon. Be careful when you unwrap this, as the goat cheese will produce steam.
7. The Gourmet
Crumble goat cheese, add a thin slice of apple, two slices of turkey, and cranberries if you like.
8. The Triple Cheese
Blend mozzarella, parmesan, and provolone, or use whatever blend you like best.
9. The Buffet
If you have a lot of people to feed, start with an unsliced loaf of bread. Slice the bread in one cm sections almost all the way through, without cutting the bottom crust. Each set of two slices will form a sandwich. Place fillings of your choice in every other incision, then wrap in foil. Throw the whole thing on the grill or fire when you’re ready, and pull apart to serve.
10. The Vegan
For the vegan in your group, use Daiya dairy-free shreds rather than cheese, and a vegan pepperoni substitute or their favorite veggies.
